The luxury manor homes and country estates around Charlottesville Virginia are some of our most scenic farm views and significant architecture. So you might be wondering… how is an estate different from a farm or a mansion? There are a couple of features that people might think about when they refer to estates in Charlottesville. Primarily, estates are thought to be luxury properties that can command a high price tag. Estates can also be called manor homes. And although many estates have large land acreages, some residential homes on less land can be called estates if the materials of the home and its styling are elegant or upgraded significantly. For instance, if a home on only a little land had significant square footage, a slate roof, a guest cottage and a pool house … that probably qualifies as a small estate by local standards. As in, a small amount of land may still be considered an estate. Estates are often large farms or equestrian properties. It’s not a hard and fast definition but hopefully it puts you in the mood to enjoy the luxury homes for sale that we’re featuring for you here.

Types of Virginia Estates and Luxury Properties
There are many types of farms and estates in Virginia. Below we’ll examine various types of Charlottesville farms. But first let’s talk about how our Central VA homes and farms have unique characteristics that are directly affected by our geographic location and by our colonial history.
Basically our office location in Charlottesville is located in the center of the state of Virginia. A young relative of mine describes Charlottesville as being “Virginia’s belly button”. We look at the Blue Ridge mountains in our western view towards Nelson County, and our eastern view levels out towards Louisa County where the state’s capital, Richmond, is located. That level plateau region is known as the Piedmont of Virginia and it supports a wide variety of farms and crops. We border the beautiful Shenandoah National Park which is a portion of the 101-mile Appalachian Trail through the mountains. Charlottesville and Richmond are the biggest metropolitan areas of Central VA and both cities have busy airports. A drive from Charlottesville to Washington D.C. takes approximately 2.5 hours. Charlottesville is an easy 1 hour drive to Richmond.
We feel the info above is important to understand our country real estate for several reasons: Uniquely beautiful mountain views provide a gorgeous scenic backdrop for our farms and homes,
1) Our proximity to major political and cultural cities provides access to events and institutions that may not be common in places such as midwestern farming areas
2) Our 4 season climate allows many different kinds of crops to flourish which supports unique farms such as vineyards
3) Virginia’s prominence in the history of the Civil War and colonial America sets the architectural styles and the traditional values that give our equestrian farms their character.
4) The University of Virginia located in Charlottesville provides the economic stability and an intellectual vitality to the community plus UVa’s teaching hospital also attracts homeowners and retirees to the region.
5) Central Virginia real estate property tax rates are relatively low compared to other regions of the U.S.
So let’s talk about each type of luxury farm or country estate in our area.
Charlottesville & Central VA Vineyards and Wineries
The sunny slopes and cool breezes…. and of course our extended seasonal growing time… make Virginia a perfect place for grapes and vineyards. This has not gone unnoticed. Charlottesville and Central VA vineyards abound, and wineries are popular destinations for tourists and locals too. In fact, as I write this there are about 3 dozen wineries who are part of the Monticello Wine Trail which is a group of wineries who welcome visitors to sample some great Virginia wines in stunning bucolic Virginia farm settings. Charlottesville Virginia Horse Farms and Equestrian Estates
Gorgeous Charlottesville area equestrian estates can be found in the Central VA counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa, Greene, Madison, Nelson and Orange. The style of each estate or country manor farm is slightly different in each county. For that reason let’s begin with estate farms in Charlottesville’s county of Albemarle. Here is your link to Albemarle County VA estate homes and country farm currently for sale. All of the properties in that link are priced at a minimum of $900,000. Generally, estate homes can command higher prices as they are located nearer to the city of Charlottesville. Drive through Albemarle County and you’ll be amazed at how many of these Charlottesville farms that have changed very little since their colonial beginnings in their style and elegant settings. In fact, there are still farms here that remain in the same family since the land was granted to them by “The King”. You’ll see magnificent center-aisle stables, 4-rail fences that seem to stretch for miles, paddocks and arenas, and scenic pastures nestled in the mountain foothills.

Something else to keep in mind if you’re comparing estate homes and farms near Charlottesville, is that you may not need to purchase a large amount of land or extra horse farm facilities…. if you choose to board your horses at one of our many equestrian boarding farms. That could open up possible new parameters so you could choose a grand home on less land, knowing that your horses were happy nearby. I’m familiar with the equestrian community of Charlottesville and would be glad to assist you in locating a great spot for your horses to board.
This is a great opportunity to talk about a very Virginia equestrian activity – foxhunting. I mention it here because foxhunting on horseback using hounds is a very traditional old country sport… and it’s ideal on the estates of Charlottesville and Central Virginia. For one thing, it requires a certain amount of money and training to participate in foxhunting events. Horse and rider travel over the countryside with others in their Hunt. Proper hunt attire and decorum is observed. Around Charlottesville many estate owners participate in the equestrian hunts around Charlottesville, and they allow other hunt riders to cross their lands during the hunt. The vast acreage of many local estates plus the grandeur of the scenery makes for a most splendid foxhunting experience as well as good companionship of like-minded equestrians.
